Challenges Facing E-learning and Distance Education In Nigeria

The most simple and common method of Distance Education adopted and used by private HEIs in Nigeria was in the form of teaching notes on CD-ROM which the students play any time they want.

However, the main challenge with this method is that the number of students per computer in which these facilities are available is not interactive compared to teachings been received in a classroom setting.

Generally, E-learning is known to be applicable at all levels of education, but it is commonly practiced in higher education as part of lifelong learning, while some institutions in Nigeria are currently using this method to promote distance education with the CD-ROM containing teaching notes which is the most common type of distance education adopted in Nigeria.

Distance education in Nigeria is faced with a major challenge of inequality of access to technology as so many students finds it difficult to purchase a good computer due to the cost relating to the average income of workers in Nigeria. Also, some tertiary institutions are experiencing low availability of internet access.

Unfortunately, power has generally been a major setback for the advancement of technology in Nigeria as most of the rural areas are not even connected to the country's electricity supply.

Other challenges may include lack of computing skills, low computer literacy level, high cost of acquiring and installing the required technologies needed for distance education and e-learning.
