The Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Communications Satellite (NigComSAT), Dr. Abimbola Alale has announced that the industry is leveraging NigComSAT to provide complimentary solutions for a functional digital economy. 

At the Nigeria Digital Sense Forum series 2021 on Internet Governance for Development, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Abimbola said the firm is already linking stakeholders through the NigComSAT-1R.

Meanwhile, Mrs. Ibiye Ukoko while speaking on the Role of NigComSAT on Digital Cooperation for Enhanced Digital Econmy said that the advantages of making use of satellite include fast and reliable deployment, less expensive infrastructure in commercially viable areas.

However, since the crisis and unrest in Nigeria, NigComSAT has worked hard to ensure connectivity is made available, back up services to servers and ensure ubiquitous, and affordable access to ICT infrastructure.

NigComSAT is leveraging the satellite to promote access to basic and enhanced telecom infrastructure and services, develop an enabling environment for ICT applications in other fields cutting across health, commerce, education, etc.

Mrs. Ibiye Ukoko cited an instance during a crisis period, she said that they have increased collaborative efforts within the private sector, civil society and government. 

Truly, the internet has affected almost every aspect of our lives and this space is heavily dominated by the private sector, this is why the private sector needs to be heavily engaged as a stakeholder. 

Digitization of the Nigerian economy has so far created benefits as digital technologies drive innovation, so many job opportunities, and economic growth.

On the other hand, Nigeria's digital transformation is having a serious impact on the economy as it applies to the Gross Domestic Product growth rate in comparison to other sectors.

However, the Nigerian digital economy is affecting all aspects of society, influencing the way people interact and bring about broad changes.

In conclusion, the ICT sector contributed 17.83 per cent to the total real GDP in Q2 2020 while the oil sector contributed 8.93 per cent in the same quarter.
